How to slaughter animals in cages in a dwarf fortress? ›

Go to the "other" tab in the citizens/animals area, they are not classed as pets unless caged+tamed, you have to select them for training in the "others" tab first. Once they are semi-wild (usually happens instantly), you can then find them in the usual pet/livestock tab and can select them for butchering.

You can wall off your fort, place the cage outside with a lever attached and kill invading force instead. Or elves. If you're feeling fancy you might want to make a set-up that eventually re-captures the beast so you can continue harassing elves.

How to butcher dead animal? Construct a Butcher's Shop, and select "butcher an animal" in its menu. If you selected "automatically butcher carcasses" in the standing orders (press y), the butcher task will be generated automatically.

Go to the Pets/Livestock screen, on there at the end of each animals line, is a spot where you can set them to be butchered. If you don't see that, you may need to mess with your interface not showing everything correctly.

If the animals are tame, you can create a pasture and assign them to it, then a dwarf will come and release them from the cage and drag them to the pasture. If they are wild/hostile animals, you need to connect a lever to the cage for releasing (and you should have one or a couple fighters nearby to kill them).

Depending on the cage design, the door will open in different ways, but most will allow you to unlatch it without putting your hand too close to the animal. If the gloves prove to be too cumbersome for the task, see if the release mechanism can be manipulated with a pole, allowing you to stay some distance away.

Once you've placed the cage, you can click on the cage. There's a checkbox indicating that this animal is assigned to this cage. If you unclick it, one of your dwarfs will come along and release the animal.

You have to deconstruct the cage so that it can be hauled. You might want to know that you can' t sell sentient creatures.

You have to go into stocks and find their gear (it'll be easy to find cuz it's forbidden,) then unforbid it. Then make a trash pit near the cages and 'trash' all the prisoners. Just make sure to uncheck the trash thing on the cage itself. Your dwarves will toss their gear in the pit to be collected later.

Angels, and their variants, are the absolute strongest creatures in the game, acting as the "final bosses" of the game if playing in "Adventure Mode".

One of your dwarves will bring a piece of food to the cage, and train the animal. This will turn them into a stray animal, with a training level that depends on how skilled the animal trainer is, ranging from "semi-wild" at the bottom end up to "masterfully trained" at the top.

You need to rig the cage up to a lever. Build the cage with (b) (j) as mentioned previously, then build a lever somewhere, (b) (T) (l). Link the lever to the cage, I forget the exact keystrokes now, and then pull the lever. The cage will release the creature inside, and your nearby soldiers can kill it.

To butcher corpses in Dwarf Fortress, put them in a stockpile, then click the butcher's knife icon. Corpses must be big enough, not rotten, and not be tamed animals or sapient creatures. Dwarves won't touch anything not in a stockpile. Make sure to add a stockpile tile under your corpses.

Pigs are great animals due to their potential to feed the fortress; with pigs, dwarves have a good supply of meat, milk, and leather. One bonus with pigs is that they require little attention and can even be kept underground, as unlike most other livestock, pigs don't need to graze.

Go in to the Labor menu, and under "standing orders" enable "collect refuse from outside". If the corpse is in good condition, you can allow your dwarves to collect the corpse and butcher it.
